Guide to the Devon & Dorset World Heritage Site. “The Jurassic Coast of Devon and Dorset has joined the Grand Canyon and the Great Barrier Reef as a World Heritage Site. It was the first natural landscape in Great Britain to win this highest of international accolades, granted by the World Heritage Committee of Unesco in December 2001.”
This is an excellent book if you are new to the area. It is a gazetteer from Exmouth in the west to Studland Bay in the east, covering some 160 kilometers of coastline, of which the National Trust owns 64 kilometers.
The area is called the Jurassic Coast due to the fact that it provides a walk back in time through 180 million years as is proved by the significant number of fossils that have been recovered here. The coastline is constantly being eroded (indeed whole fields falling into the sea in some areas) and exposing areas of rock never seen before by mankind – indeed fossils new to science sometimes appear here.
“The complete guide to Devon’s most magnificent historic gardens”. I don’t often buy guidebooks from privately run places – they tend to be written in an amateur manner, but this one is excellent! Not only is it full of wonderful photos and interesting, informative text, but it also makes an excellent souvenir and reference book.
“Set in the tranquil Otter Valley near the Cathedral city of Exeter, Bicton Park Botanical Gardens are among the most beautiful of Britain’s world-renowned historic gardens. This book, with its 13,000 words and 100 pictures, contains the most comprehensive account ever written of past and present Bicton.”

A sketchbook of the Axmouth to Lyme Regis Nature Reserve. “The studies in this book are the work of an exceptionally gifted young artist”. The book covers the nature aspects of “a dramatic area of coastline that is perhaps unique in Europe. The landslip between Axmouth (Devon) and Lyme Regis (Dorset) has formed its own nature reserve, a territory of shifting ground and tumbling rocks and vegetation where wildlife can thrive undisturbed by man”.

Lots of wonderful photographs from around Portland and text explaining it's history and geography. Portland is a surprisingly wonderful place to visit with plenty to do to fill up a whole day's visit.

Chips Barber is a local author and he’s written many little paperback books on the area. This one covers the East Devon Coast Path from Lyme Regis west beyond Exmouth to Lympstone. A useful little book with plenty of text and photos to interest newcomers to this area.

This little book is filled with local photos of plants, birds, animals and
scenery. A good introduction to the area for nature lovers.

This book is filled with local photos of places to visit in Dorset. All are
reachable for a day trip from the house in Seaton.
